Scoring Power Points~Review
After reading Scoring Power Points, by Jamie Mc Kenzie, it refreshed my memory of how I felt the first time I read it. The main points that jumped out at me both times were, avoid reading slides aloud and eliminate distractions. These are the two things that drive me nuts about Power Points and it’s not just students making these mistakes. I have been in many a college course where the teacher thinks it’s perfectly fine to waste my time by reading each slide (people will even say ” I know you all can read so I’ll let you” and then STILL read it) it’s crazy! I was always taught the slides are like note cards, just there to give out key points that the speaker could expand on. On the other hand it’s more of the first time users that go over board on the distractions. I feel the best way to remedy this is to let students go wild and try every sound and every transition before we even start to talk about making a real project, it takes away the magical temptation to over do it.
EDUC 524 Journal #1
What needs of your audience must you, as the facilitator, keep in mind in terms of instructional delivery, hand-outs, products etc.? How can the design of your materials and teaching enhance the experience for your participants?
After reading the first sixty-eight pages of The Non-Designer’s Web Book, by Robin Williams and John Tollett, I decided it should be re-titled The Non-Computer User’s Web Book. I’m hoping the content will pick up soon. The nice thing is, since this book is pretty basic it would be great for faculty that is just starting out with technology and needs some extra help. So, I guess you could say I could use it in training a staff someday. And, after reading Don’t Make Me Think, by Steve Krug, I would know how to deliver the information without my students (either elementary or adult) getting lost. They way Krug talks about Page Names and Breadcrumbs, makes me think of how to improve headings on students handouts or tops of training packets. Pretty much Don’t Make Me Think, has made me think about making my classroom simpler so I can enhance participation and confuse my class less. It’s funny how you can twist web site design into lesson design!
